Choosing the right slipmats for you:

If you are a DJ, we would recommend slipmats with the glazed underside as they are great for scratching or cueing the record.

If you are a vinyl listener who simply puts a record on and plays it from the beginning to end & have no need to cue or scratch, then we would recommend the non glazed slipmat as they are less slippery and slightly thicker.

This is just a recommendation, however, both types of slipmat work for any scenario, for example; some DJs don’t like their slipmats too slippery & opt for the 2.8mm none glazed slipmats. Likewise, some vinyl listeners prefer a thinner slipmat & opt for the 2.2mm glazed slipmat.

As motoring became popular in the early 1900s, the need for mechanical expertise to service, repair, refuel, and sell vehicles soared – and the ‘garage’ was born. From the Mock-Tudor fad of the 1920s via the Streamline Moderne of the 1930s, to the simple Modernist rationalism of post-war Britain, each era has produced a distinct automotive architecture. With the introduction of the Ministry of Transport (MOT) vehicle test in the 1960s, demand accelerated still further. A diverse array of structures was utilised – churches, cinemas, railway arches, fire stations, shops, factories – all proved versatile enough to find second lives as garages. As the era of the combustion engine draws to a close, Butler’s enchanting photographs of 226 Garages and Service Stations document the charm and personality of these survivors of the petrol age.

St Albans is a city rich in history, with its origins in the Iron Age and known as Verulamium following the Roman conquest in ad 43. Much of that history is enshrined in its amazing pubs, which include old coaching inns, a pub where soldiers fighting in the Wars of the Roses relaxed with ale, and Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, dating from the seventeenth century and possibly even earlier. Margaret Calvert’s 20mph is a reimagined road sign crafted from retroreflective material, the very same material she designed for UK roadways in the 1960s, and created specifically for her 2023 solo exhibition Roadworks at Liminal Gallery. This work takes the familiar 20mph sign and amplifies it with bold colour, showcasing Calvert’s signature playful approach to design. Inspired by a large-scale 30mph sign she created for her retrospective at the Design Museum in 2020, 20mph retains the sign’s original scale, adding a layer of provenance and further emphasising the designer's understanding of public signage.

About the Artist
Margaret Calvert OBE RDI (b. 1936) is a British graphic designer and typographer best known for co-designing the UK’s road signage system in the 1960s with Jock Kinneir, as well as creating the Transport, Rail Alphabet, and Calvert typefaces. Her work has shaped public design across Britain, with the Transport typeface later adapted into New Transport for the GOV.UK website. She taught at the Royal College of Art for nearly 40 years, leading the graphics department from 1987 to 1991, and was honoured with awards including the D&AD President’s Award (2015) and an OBE (2016) for services to typography and road safety. A major retrospective, Margaret Calvert: Woman at Work, was held at the Design Museum from 2020 to 2021.
