Mrs Dickens's Caramelised Onion Chutney – Charles Dickens Museum

Mrs Dickens's Caramelised Onion Chutney

£7.50

Product description from their website:

From our Mrs Dickens's range, this caramelised onion chutney brings you the taste of the Victorian pantry. Onions are blended with dates, apples, spices and malt vinegar to create a gorgeously sweet and tangy chutney. Made exclusively for the Charles Dickens Museum, it’s the perfect gift, savoury treat or souvenir.

Catherine Dickens, nee' Hogarth, was the wife of Charles Dickens from their marriage in 1836 till Dickens's death in 1870, though the couple separated in 1858. A renowned hostess and gregarious entertainer, Catherine published her own 'book of fares' in 1852 called 'What Shall We Have For Dinner?' Containing recipes and menus for groups of 2 to 12 people, it not only demonstrates Catherine's canny ability to host parties of all sizes, but it offers us a rare glimpse into what the Dickens family themselves often ate.

This delicious chutney is made in England.

A green hardback book

£20.00

Product description from their website:

The Whole Course of Chirurgerie by Peter Lowe. Being a Facsimile of the First Edition of 1597, with Engravings from the Second Edition of 1612. Classics of Medicine Library in collaboration with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1981.

This work by Peter Lowe, founder of what is now known as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, is the first complete treatise on surgery to be written in English and the first to be designed with the student in mind. The work outlines the surgical operations carried out in the 16th century, within the context of humoral medicine. The illustrations of medical instruments at the rear of the book are taken from the second edition of 1612. They are similar to those of the great French surgeon, Ambroise Paré, who may well have exerted a strong influence on Lowe's surgical education.

An Alphabet of Architectural Models – Sir John Soane's Museum

Cover of An Alphabet of Architectural Models

£25.00

Product description from their website:

For thousands of years, architects have used models to experiment, invent and communicate. A world in miniature, such models are even more varied in their purposes and materials than their full-scale counterparts. This elegant book explores the fascinating nature of the architectural model through twenty-six illustrated essays, one for each letter of the alphabet. Written by architects, model-makers, curators, conservators and scholars, the texts examine such fundamental issues as modelling materials and techniques, scale, and the role of the model in the design process. They also consider the uses of models outside the architect's office, including as souvenirs, small-scale replicas for film sets, and toys for children and adults alike. The result is a wide-ranging, original account of the multiple lives of the architectural model.

Includes an essay by Helen Dorey, Deputy Director and Inspectress of Sir John Soane's Museum.
