Grotesque Green Man Skull – Sir John Soane's Museum

Grotesque Green Man Skull

£25.00

Product description from their website:

Inspired by the collection of Grotesques filling the Monk's Parlour in the crypt area of the Sir John Soane Museum. It was with mixed feelings that Soane watched a rising public fashion for the Gothic style. He designed this playfully sombre space, the Monk's Parlour to satirise this style.

Taken from the medieval (1350) carvings that are found upon the highly decorated Misericords and supports within the choir stalls at Ely Cathedral. This carving shows another depiction of the legendary pagan image of the Green Man. This most interesting portrait shows the Green Man as being a human skull, seen with the classic foliage around the head but most differently being that of an image of death. The Green Man symbolises the eternal cycle of life from one generation to the next through birth to death and then carried on in the next generation and has close associations with nature, the natural elements and Mother Nature. This carving is set to remind us that we are all mortal beings with death a close certainty; this would have been most prominent in the medieval period where life was very hard and full of uncertainties.

Oakapple Designs Ltd are the only company in the UK with permission to take moulds from original medieval carvings from within the Cathedrals of Britain and to then reproduce them for sale. These reproductions are cast from a resin composite and then stained to give the product all the fine detail, feel and authenticity of the original carving.

Fitted with a ring for hanging. Size is approx 100 mm x 130 mm

Made in the Amazonian Region of Brazil. Due to their handmade nature, each one will have its unique characteristics.

Care instructions: not dishwasher safe

Product story
A fascinating detail about Tapajó pottery is that, according to archaeologist Anna Roosevelt, it is the oldest artisanal expression of the people in the Tapajós region, Amazonia. This craft dates back around six thousand years, as per studies conducted in the USA. During this time, the inhabitants of Tapajós were already creating items like necked vessels, caryatid vessels, and other utensils for their needs. In addition to necked and caryatid vessels, Santarém pottery also stands out for its figurines. These exhibit a wide variety of anthropomorphic or zoomorphic forms, which can be hollow, solid, or a combination of both.
