Barbara Walker: Being Here Exhibition Catalogue – Arnolfini

Barbara Walker: Being Here Exhibition Catalogue

£25.00

Product description from their website:

Published by The Whitworth, this illustrated catalogue features new essays on Walker’s practice by Mora J. Beauchamp-Byrd, Eddie Chambers, Alice Correia, Leanne Green, Rianna Jade Parker and the exhibition curators Poppy Bowers and Hannah Vollam.

For over twenty-five years, Walker has been making intensely observed and empathetic figurative work that creates space for Black presence, power and belonging. Ranging from delicate graphite drawings on archival documents to a monumental charcoal wall drawing, Walker tackles wide-ranging themes such as the policing and surveillance of Black life, twentieth-century war histories, immigration and Old Master paintings to challenge conventions of representation and the histories they are rooted in.

This New Noise: Vinyl 2LP – Public Service Broadcasting

This New Noise: Vinyl 2LP

£29.99

Product description from their website:

Public Service Broadcasting's This New Noise, the remixed and remastered live recording of their acclaimed 2022 BBC Proms show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, released on 8 September 2023 via Test Card Recordings.

A celebration of the power of radio written in recognition of the centenary of the BBC, This New Noise saw the band joining forces with the 88 piece BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley. A standout performance from 2022’s BBC Proms, it received 5*s in The Telegraph who called it “a resonant, timely and ultimately touching show”. Founder member J. Willgoose, Esq. remixed the concert from scratch, bringing out even more depth and texture from a multi-layered performance and showing it in a new light.

This New Noise is the second time Public Service Broadcasting have been commissioned for the BBC Proms. In 2019 the band performed an orchestral arrangement of their 2015 studio album The Race for Space with The Multi-Story Orchestra to mark the 50th anniversary of the first manned mission to the Moon.

In conjunction with the announcement, the band shares "Broadcasting House”

Public Service Broadcasting have been “teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future” for more than a decade now. 2013’s debut album Inform - Educate - Entertain used archival samples from the British Film Institute as audio-portals to the Battle Of Britain, the summit of Everest and beyond. Two years later, The Race For Space used similar methods to laud the superpowers’ rivalry and heroism in orbit and on the Moon. An indie DIY phenomenon the album has remarkably since achieved gold disc status having sold over 100,000 copies in the UK alone. In 2017, joined by voices including Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield, Every Valley was a moving exploration of community and memory via the rise and fall of the British coal industry.

Their most ambitious undertaking yet, Bright Magic brought the listener to Europe’s heart and de facto capital, the cultural and political metropolis that is the ‘Hauptstadt’ of the Federal Republic of Germany – Berlin. Released in late 2021, and debuting at No 2 inthe UK album chart, the band’s fourth album was described by Electronic Sound as “their most ambitious, leftfield and majestic work to date, their glorious creative peak, their magnum opus”, DIY said “it flourished at its most calm and erupted at its most fervent” and Clash said it “cemented PSB's reputation as a vital act right at the top of their game”. The album also featured multiple BBC Radio 6 Music A-Listed singles, including “People, Let’s Dance” [ft. EERA] and “Blue Heaven” [ft. Andreya Casablanca].

Sheela na gig – Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities

Sheela na gig

£26.00

Product description from their website:

No Home Should Be Without One – Wonderful Sandstone Cement Frost proof Replicas 12 x 8cm

A sheela na gig is a figurative carving of a naked woman displaying an exaggerated vulva. These carvings, from the Middle Ages, are architectural grotesques found throughout most of Europe on cathedrals, castles, and other buildings.

The greatest concentrations can be found in Ireland, Great Britain, France and Spain, sometimes together with male figures. Ireland has the greatest number of surviving sheela na gig carvings; Joanne McMahon and Jack Roberts cite 124 examples in Ireland and 45 examples in Britain. One of the best examples may be found in the Round Tower at Rattoo, in County Kerry, Ireland. There is a replica of the Round Tower sheela na gig in the County Museum in Tralee town. Another well-known example may be seen at Kilpeck in Herefordshire, England.

The carvings may have been used to ward off death, evil and demons. Other grotesque carvings, such as gargoyles and hunky punks, were frequently part of church decorations all over Europe. It is commonly said that their purpose was to keep evil spirits away (see apotropaic magic). They often are positioned over doors or windows, presumably to protect these openings.

The Daily News RIP screen print – Spike Island Artspace

The Daily News RIP screen print

£225.00

Product description from their website:

Melissa Gordon

The Daily News RIP (Connecticut Courant, October 29, 1764), 2013

Melissa Gordon’s The Daily News RIP (Connecticut Courant, October 29, 1764), 2013 is part of a series of art works that take their inspiration from journalism. Taking the grid structure from the front page of a now defunct newspaper, the artist removes all information except for the structuring lines and columns. These elements form the composition of the work, which Gordon creates by pushing paint through blank silk screens that would usually have an image exposed onto them. By combining these techniques, the artist blurs the line between the mechanical process of print and the handcrafted nature of painting.

  • Artist Name: Melissa Gordon
  • Edition Title: The Daily News RIP (Connecticut Courant, October 29, 1764)
  • Year: 2013
  • Edition of 15
  • Materials: Full colour screen print

Dolly the Sheep Tea Towel – National Museums Scotland

Dolly the Sheep - Tea Towel

£8.99

Product description from their website:

This vibrant and informative Tea Towel is perfect for your day to day, and for learning about the incredible life of Dolly the sheep!

Dolly was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell. Before Dolly was born, this was thought to be impossible. Scientists believed that specialised adult cells, those that had a certain job (like a skin cell or a liver cell), only held the information to do with that job. Dolly was grown from a single mammary cell which contained all the information to create a whole new sheep.

Dolly started her life as a single cell in a test tube taken from the mammary gland of a Finn Dorset sheep and an egg cell from a Scottish Blackface Sheep. Once normal development was confirmed in a lab at six days, the embryo was transferred into a surrogate mother. Dolly was then born on 5 July 1996 and named after the country western singer Dolly Parton.
