The opening of this fragrance is fresh, citrusy and spicy. The notes of bergamot, black pepper and cassis transport us to the vibrant greenery on the way to Kentridge's studio in the heart of South Africa. Hidden beneath watery floral notes is the scent of charcoal and pencils, brushes and ink. Undulating from fresh to deep notes, this fragrance is rooted in the powdery scent of paper, in combination with the woody notes of musk.

Award-winning poet, playwright and 2014 Foundling Fellow, Lemn Sissay OBE, created Superman was a Foundling, a poem printed on the walls of the Museum’s Study Studio.

Superman was a Foundling is a striking installation, exploring the powerful role of orphaned, fostered and adopted children in our culture. Sissay, who experienced growing up in care, describes the project as addressing the disparity between our admiration for fictional characters and a widespread disregard for their real-life counterparts:

“Superman was a Foundling upraises the fictional stars of popular and classic culture who are fostered, adopted or orphaned. They range from Romulus and Remus of Rome’s foundation myth, to Lisbeth Salander of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Their adventures have enriched our lives, but we do not recognise the connection between the fictional characters and the fostered, adopted and orphaned children in our midst.”

The tea towel bears a detail of the installation at the Foundling Museum.

Designed by Palace architect A.W.N. Pugin and originally cast by Mintons of Stoke on Trent, the encaustic floor tiles that can be found throughout the Palace of Westminster have borne witness to some of the most important moments in the history of the United Kingdom – and have been walked upon by some of its most renowned politicians. 

Removed as part of a nine-year conservation and restoration project, our mid grade tiles are excellent examples of Pugin's neo-gothic designs. They show some signs of wear and fading of colour, which may be indicative of the age of the tile and/or its prominence on walking routes through the Palace. 

Each tile comes presented in a branded, satin-lined gift box with a certificate of authenticity that gives information about the encaustic tiles restoration project and and the location within the Palace from which the tile was removed.

At the intersection of the street and sport we find themes of the day: how racial, ethnic, and class tensions play out in visual culture. On the fringe of sports culture are the Ultras, the football fans whose pyrotechnics, chants, wildly creative stunts, and hooliganism are infamous.

Using selections from his archive containing hundreds of photographs of Ultras' street art and graffiti, including everything from elaborate murals to stickers to “scratchitto” incisions and spray-paint duels, award-winning author Mitja Velikonja introduces readers to the visual iconography of a fascinating underworld. The Ultra subculture is built by “no-bodys,” the anonymous (primarily) men whose attachments to their teams, specifically in Europe and post-socialist states, sometimes cross the lines into nationalist sentiments and militaristic “Blood and Soil” extremism. After examining general themes and trends in street art and tifo club graffiti, Velikonja embarks on a case study of fans from his native Slovenia and touches on the roles of neighbouring football fans in the Balkan Wars.

He continues with an analysis of political and socially progressive graffiti, local trends and circumstances, as well as its role in the United States. As he peels back layers of misinformation and misrepresentation, he cues our understanding of factional mindsets within histories of political instability, arguing for dissensus being a critical element to democracies. In the end, we understand that while always under siege, the ultra-fans require nothing less than fidelity and devotion, but precisely to what can be determined — it's anyone's game to call.
