Any offcuts during Charlotte’s making process are dried and recycled and reused. There is a very small percentage of clay which ends up in a slurry bucket, which is emptied every few months, which cannot be reused as it is a mixture of products.

Libraries Give Us Power Adult T-Shirt – Ikon Gallery, Birmingham

Libraries Give Us Power Adult T-Shirt

£30.00

Product description from their website:

A P+C's x Black Country Type collaboration to celebrate the life-changing value of libraries

Their artwork is inspired by BCT's photograph of an 80s sign from the front of Selly Oak Library, which Birmingham City Council closed in 2018. The tee was photographed in the ruins of the library. The slogan, "LIBRARIES GIVE US POWER," is adapted from the Manic Street Preachers song "A Design for Life.”

Birmingham City Council is currently in the process of making significant cuts to the community library service. Under their proposals, only 10 of 35 community libraries will remain open full time, with the rest reduced to two days of operation, closed entirely, or handed over to unfunded volunteer groups. This means that many parts of the city, including areas facing high levels of deprivation, will be without a community library for the first time in 140 years. This is seen as a blueprint for social decline. They strongly oppose this plan, saying "WE SAY NO!”

During the Birmingham City Council consultation period, all profits from this project were donated to help cover the printing costs of Brum Library Zine, a remarkable volunteer-led protest publication available for free in all community libraries starting from 21st September. A total of £1215 was donated.

The tees are crafted from the softest 100% organic, GOTS-certified cotton, offering a relaxed fit, gender-neutral design, and fairwear accreditation. They are hand screen printed in Birmingham using vegan, water-based, eco-friendly inks. Additionally, screenprints are available.

Witch in a Bottle Gin 70cl – Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford

Witch in a Bottle Gin 70cl

£42.00

Product description from their website:

There is a silver glass bottle, on display at the Pitt Rivers Museum, which is said to contain a witch. It was collected in 1915 in Hove, Sussex, at a time when traditions were seen to be under threat from major social change. Seemingly outmoded objects like this were used as a means of contrasting past and present.

The tale accompanying the artefact is unusual. The more common form of witch bottle was a magical tool to protect against evil and counteract bewitchment, not a bottle containing a witch. It is said to have been obtained from an 'old lady' who remarked that releasing the witch would unleash 'a peck o’ trouble’.

Whether this unnamed informant existed or not, the narrative supported popular ideas that cast witchcraft as gendered and troublesome, evoking stories of genies, conjurors and fairies. The bottle was collected by folklorist and archaeologist Margaret Murray, who is best known for writing about European witch cults. Her theories emphasised female roles but contrasted with today's understanding of witchcraft as a misogynistic and religious tool for subjugating women. Although discredited, Murray's ideas helped to inspire modern Wicca. They can also be read as the work of a prominent female scholar in a male-dominated academy.

The Pitt Rivers Museum does not plan to ever open the witch bottle from Sussex. They've made a bottle you can open... go ahead... and try this bewitchingly delicious blend of gin made from botanicals including lime flower oil and lemon peel. There are so many stories we can tell about these bottles, do come visit us to find out more.
