Electronic Solar System - Original Open Edition – Dorothy

Electronic Solar System - Original Open Edition

£30.00

Product description from their website:

Just like the planets orbit the sun and the moons orbit the planets, our new Electronic Solar System print maps out the massive pull and influence that bands like Kraftwerk, CAN, Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, Aphex Twin and Daft Punk have had on each other and the bands around them.

At the centre of our Electronic Solar System omitting a massive force are Kraftwerk, being closed orbited by CAN, Brian Eno and Depeche Mode.

Further out the pioneers of techno, the Belleville Three are closely orbited by the pioneers of acid house Phuture, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. And Aphex Twin is in good company with Radiohead and fellow Warp label mates Autechre, Boards of Canada, Oneohtrix Point Never and Squarepusher.

The pioneering electronic composter Delia Derbyshire from BBC Radiophonic Workshop cuts across the solar system as a comet, closely passing another techno trailblazer, Björk.

Donald Rodney: A Reader – Spike Island Artspace

Donald Rodney: A Reader

£20.00

Product description from their website:

This reader brings together crucial perspectives from leading art historians, artists and peers, illuminating artist Donald Rodney’s enduring influence on contemporary art and cultural discourse.

Adopting the physical dimensions of Rodney’s treasured sketchbooks, this book also includes full-scale reproductions of his notes and drawings, alongside selected works spanning his career.

"Donald Rodney was a trailblazer. He was able to articulate and deconstruct the ongoing damage projected onto the black male body often found in popular media. Drawing on forms of representation that have refused to consider black masculinity as sensitive or vulnerable, Donald’s artistic practice stands for a worldly humanness, infused with poignancy and incisive brilliance.”—Sonia Boyce, artist and peer of Donald Rodney

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Donald Rodney: Visceral Canker at Spike Island, Bristol, Nottingham Contemporary and Whitechapel Gallery, London.

DONALD RODNEY

Donald Rodney (b. West Bromwich, 1961–1998) was a British artist. He was born in West Bromwich, to Jamaican parents, and grew up in Smethwick, on the outskirts of Birmingham. Rodney first gained visibility as a member of the BLK Art Group in the early 1980s, through a series of exhibitions titled The Pan-Afrikan Connection (1981–84).

Mary Cameron: Life in Paint – Museums & Galleries Edinburgh – City of Edinburgh Council

Mary Cameron: Life in Paint

£20.00

Product description from their website:

This beautiful catalogue accompanies the free exhibition 'Mary Cameron: Life in Paint' at City Art Centre in Edinburgh (2nd November 2019 to 15th March 2020). The show celebrates the life and career of the pioneering Edinburgh-born artist. The catalogue is written by Helen E. Scott, Curator of Fine Art at City Art Centre, Edinburgh, with a foreword by Kenneth McConkey, Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Northumbria.

Mary Cameron (1865–1921) was a woman ahead of her time. She began her artistic career as a portraitist and genre painter in her native city, before venturing abroad to study in Paris. Foreign travel proved to be an enduring source of inspiration. In 1900 she visited Madrid for the first time, and became captivated by the Spanish culture, people and scenery. Establishing studios in Madrid and Seville, she painted large-scale compositions of traditional peasant life, dramatic bullfights and rural landscapes. Cameron exhibited widely during her lifetime, and her talents were admired by contemporaries such as John Lavery and Alexander Roche.

The free exhibition explores the fascinating story of Cameron’s life and career, charting her creative journey from elegant family portraits to breathtaking Spanish scenes. It features over forty rarely seen artworks from public and private collections, complemented by historic photographs and archival material. The show runs from 2nd November 2019 to 15th March 2020.

Orders for this book are fulfilled by Museums & Galleries Edinburgh. Purchases support the collection.

Holga 135FC Camera – The Photographers’ Gallery

Holga 135FC Camera

£54.99

Product description from their website:

The famous Holga plastic "toy camera" from Hong Kong was originally designed for 35mm film but was reconfigured for 120 medium format for the Chinese market in the 1980s. This can result in light leaks, vignetting and unpredictable soft, dreamy images and is a great way to get into medium format photography at a much cheaper price than more sophisticated alternatives.

The Holga became very popular through the 2000s thanks to specialist suppliers such as the Bookshop and Lomography with a wide range of cameras and accessories but in 2015 the factory suddenly closed down. Luckily the moulds were saved and another company Sunrise is now manufacturing several Holga models again.

This is the 135FC 35mm model with a built-in flash and black corners so that images vignette like a classic Holga 120 camera. Unlike other cheap, re-usable 35mm cameras it has two aperture and four focal length settings.

Specifications

  • Format: 35mm compact camera
  • Type: Compact camera
  • Lens: Plastic 60mm
  • Focal length: Adjustable 0.9m to infinity
  • Aperture: f/8 / f/11
  • Shutter speed: 1/100th or bulb
  • ISO: No setting, 400 ISO optimal
  • Flash: Built-in and external hotshoe mount
