£15.99

Product description from their website:

This detailed 1:72 scale model kit of the Bristol 192 Belvedere represents a notable post-war milestone for the UK's aviation sector. Comprising 50 plastic components and rated as a Skill Level 2 project, this kit accurately depicts the tandem-rotor heavy-lift helicopter, renowned for its adaptability in modern rotorcraft design. Its twin-engine redundancy ensures that it can safely continue flying even if one engine fails.

Key Features

  • 1:72 scale model kit with 50 parts
  • Skill Level 2 build suitable for ages 8 and above
  • Two authentic paint schemes included
  • Recreates the distinctive tandem-rotor configuration
  • Captures Britain's Cold War era rotary-wing innovation

History

The Bristol Belvedere marked a significant advancement in British helicopter technology during the Cold War. Designed as a tandem-rotor heavy-lift aircraft, it highlighted remarkable engineering focused on operational safety and effectiveness. With true twin-engine redundancy, the Belvedere could maintain flight on a single engine if necessary, a crucial feature for military missions in challenging conditions.

This adaptable rotorcraft demonstrated the progress made in helicopter technology following the war, capable of performing various roles from tactical transport to logistical support. Despite its notable abilities and the substantial investment in its creation, only 26 units were manufactured, making it a rare model even during its active years. This limited production contributes to its allure among aviation enthusiasts, symbolising an intriguing period in British aerospace history where innovation met the practical demands of military aviation.

100 20th Century Sports and Leisure Buildings – The Twentieth Century Society

100 20th Century Sports and Leisure Buildings

£25.00

Product description from their website:

A showcase of Britain's most architecturally significant sports and leisure buildings from the twentieth century and beyond.

100 20th Century Sports and Leisure Buildings gives a fascinating insight into the spaces where we play: from swimming pools and skate parks to ice rinks and cricket pavilions. These structures are not only an intensely evocative part of our shared social heritage but some of the most architecturally innovative constructions of the past century - as seen here in buildings by architects including Edwin Lutyens, Walter Tapper, John Burnet and Zaha Hadid.

The twentieth century saw a rapid expansion in the public provision for sports and leisure as workers won the right to paid holiday, prompting a boom in the construction of municipal lidos, pools and sports grounds. Later in the century leisure centres brought together facilities for a whole range of sports with an emphasis on family fun, combining environmentally controlled environments with soaring engineering and playful pop imagery. Space-age geodesic domes, diamond-glazed pyramids, castellated forts, brutalist elephants and Moorish postmodern palaces are just a few of the highlights of this idiosyncratic genre showcased here.

Expert essays on particular building types, including Alan Powers on lidos and Simon Inglis on sports stadiums, give further context to these spaces. Also included is an introduction with a strong campaigning element - with the decimation of local authority budgets forcing the closure of many centres and pools, this is a timely exploration that provides a crucial record of this key part of our cultural heritage.
