The AK-47, officially called the Avtomat Kalashnikova, is originally a Russian weapon that has become one of the most famous and widely used firearms in the world. Dozens of gold-plated AK-47s were found in royal palaces during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, having been used as status symbols and being given as gifts to important individuals.
The Royal Armouries collection includes one of these gold-plated AK-47s, discovered and seized by UK Customs at Heathrow in 2003. It went on public display for the first time in 2023-24, as part of the museum’s thought-provoking Re:Loaded exhibition.
