2-in 1 Chess & draughts set – Tate Gallery

2-in 1 Chess & draughts set
£70

Product description from their website:

Inspired by graphic art, this 2-in-1 chess and checkers set is the perfect games set for the whole family.

In pastel and primary colours, the board and pieces are all made from sustainably harvested rubberwood. Chess or draughts can be played using the counters on either side of the double-sided board, with two designs for variety. Red and blue dots replace the traditional black and white counters for checkers, and can be flipped over to reveal stylised stamps denoting the chess pieces. When you’re finished playing, the pieces stack inside the box and the board slides into the top to act as a beautifully decorated lid, ensuring you’ll want to keep the set in display when not in use.

This set was designed for MoMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York) by Panisa Khunprasert. Khunprasert is a toy and game designer who gained an MFA at The School of Visual Arts in New York before returning to Thailand to join her family toy business.

MoMA Design Store take care to ensure that their products embody the spirit of good design, and work closely with their designers, so we’re pleased to be able to offer their designs to customers at Tate Shop. Part of our carefully curated collection of design-led homeware, you can rest assured that the chess and draughts set has been created with longevity in mind, with an evergreen design that’ll fit into a variety of settings, from children’s bedrooms to mid-century modern lounges.

Strawberry Thief Small Willow Teapot by Burleigh – William Morris Gallery

Strawberry Thief Small Willow Teapot by Burleigh

£156.00

Product description from their website:

Experience the charm of a timeless design with our exclusive, hand-crafted William Morris Strawberry Thief Ceramics collection by Burleigh. Presented in elegant gift boxes, these pieces make a striking gift for any Morris or Burleigh collector. Each item, including
the distinctive cow creamer, butter dish, small tankard jug, large Etruscan jug and teapot, beautifully combines artistry with practicality.

First designed in 1883, Strawberry Thief was one of Morris’s most intricate and expensive patterns. Inspired by the thrushes he saw in his garden, it remains one of his most beloved works. Each piece is decorated by skilled artisans using Burleigh’s centuries-old tissue
transfer printing technique, honouring a rare craft preserved at the last remaining pottery in the UK to use this method. Even the shapes have a story, with each piece carrying on the heritage of traditional craftsmanship.

As part of our Legacy Collection, your purchase directly supports British artisans and their traditional craft practices, while also helping William Morris Gallery fund its vital work.

This contemporary interpretation of the design has been uniquely decorated by skilled craftsmen with Burleigh's centuries-old technique of tissue transfer printing from hand-engraved copper rollers in the last remaining pottery using this technique in the UK.

About Burleigh

We have been crafting high-quality ceramics in England for over 160 years. Recognised for our dedication to fine craftsmanship and traditional manufacturing, we have been making our iconic blue and white ceramics, using the same techniques for generations. We are the last pottery in the world to use the traditional and timeless skill of underglaze tissue printing, which is an English process dating back over 200 years.

Here at Burleigh we use traditional skills and techniques, the highest-quality raw materials and our dedicated team of craftspeople to create our classic and timeless tableware, just like we did 170 years ago.

Fu Dog Netsuke Ornament, Assorted Designs – British Museum

Fu Dog Netsuke Ornament, Assorted Designs

£45.00

Product description from their website:

A hand-carved rosewood netsuke ornament depicting a fu dog.

An exquisite, hand-carved boxwood netsuke featuring a fierce and detailed fu dog, otherwise known as a Chinese guardian lion. The rich, deep grain of the boxwood gives this traditional Japanese ornament a beautiful, tactile finish that deepens with age.

Please note, these netsuke are available in assorted designs. Each order is selected at random, and specific designs cannot be guaranteed.

Netsuke are Japanese miniature ornamental sculptures which were originally invented in the 17th century, during the Edo Period, to serve a practical function. Traditional robe garments, such as kosode and kimono had no pockets, so men would carry small, often ornamental containers called inro which they would secure to their obi sashes with a cord fastened with a carved netsuke. Netsuke, originally plain toggles, evolved into highly detailed artistic creations, often representing humans, gods and animals. In recent years, they have become exceedingly popular among collectors.

In Japan, the ‘fu dog’, also known as komainu, is a mythical lion-like guardian statue traditionally standing at the entrance of palaces and tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of the wealthy, and believed to possess powerful mythic protective abilities. Originating from the Chinese ‘fu dogs’, these creatures are a popular symbol of strength and spiritual protection in both Japanese and Chinese cultures.

A wonderful gift for a lover of Japanese craft and Chinese mythology.
